Privacy Policy
What we collect
We collect nothing about how you use the app — it does not report your activity to us. The only personal data we ask you for is the email address on an optional SmartMetal account and anything you write in a feedback message. Like any online service, when the app talks to our servers those requests appear in routine, short-lived server logs (which include your IP address), and the optional account carries the usual sign-in records. Google's ad SDK collects the ad-serving data described under Advertising below. We do not sell or share any of it.
Your calculations stay on your device
Any values you enter and any calculation history (the in-app Log) are stored locally on your device only. This information is never sent to us or to anyone else, and we have no way to read it. Deleting the app permanently removes this data.
Advertising
The iOS app shows one banner ad at the bottom of the screen, served by Google AdMob. These ads are non-personalized: every ad request tells Google to serve contextual ads only, no advertising identifier (IDFA) is used, and the app never asks for app-tracking permission because it never tracks you.
To deliver ads and prevent fraud, Google receives standard request data from your device — such as your IP address, device model and operating system version, approximate (city-level) location derived from your IP address, and a device identifier used for frequency capping and invalid-traffic detection (not the advertising identifier / IDFA). Google's ad SDK also records ad-interaction data (which ads were shown and tapped) and its own crash and performance diagnostics. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy. The banner is the app's only source of revenue; there is no paid tier and nothing to buy.
Analytics and tracking
We run no analytics in the iOS app, and nothing tracks you across apps or sites. The only analytics-type data the iOS app produces is the ad SDK's own crash and performance diagnostics, described above. If you use the web version at offset.smartmetal.ca, that site uses privacy-friendly, aggregate analytics (Vercel Analytics) to count visits and pageviews — no advertising trackers and no cross-site tracking.
Account — optional, never required
Every calculator works without an account. You can optionally sign in with a SmartMetal account (an email address, hosted with Supabase, shared with our other apps and website). It is used only to identify you when you send feedback or manage your account. You can delete your account and its data at any time from Settings in the app.
Feedback
If you use the in-app feedback form, the message you write — plus your email address, if you are signed in or choose to include one — is delivered to us as an email and kept like ordinary correspondence. Nothing is sent unless you tap send.
Update check
On launch, the app may fetch a small version file from our server to learn whether an update is available or required. This request carries no personal data beyond what any web request includes (such as your IP address).
Works offline
The calculators run entirely on your device and do not require an internet connection. The network is used only for the banner ad, the update check, and — if you use them — sign-in, feedback, and managing or deleting your account. With no connection there is simply no ad, and the tools keep working.
Children’s privacy
SmartMetal Offset is a professional trade tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and ads are non-personalized for every user.
Third parties
A short list, each doing one job:
- Google (AdMob) serves the non-personalized banner ads described above.
- Supabase hosts the optional SmartMetal account.
- Vercel hosts our website and the endpoints the app talks to (feedback, account deletion, the update check), so those requests pass through its infrastructure and logs.
- Resend delivers feedback messages to our inbox as email.
These providers may process data on servers outside Canada, primarily in the United States. The four companies above are the only services your data reaches through the app. Feedback and anything you email us then lands in our own mailbox, which is ordinary hosted email (currently Microsoft). Nothing is ever shared for advertising or marketing purposes.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will post the updated version on this page with a new effective date.
